Mission and Goals

Founded in late 1973, the New Hartford Land Trust (NHLT) is an all-volunteer, private, nonprofit, membership organization dedicated to promoting the permanent preservation and protection of significant farmland, forest, and other open space and natural resources as well as unique scenic, natural and historic sites in New Hartford, Connecticut.

Our goals are: 1) to effectively steward and protect in perpetuity the 720 acres that we own or on which we hold conservation easements; 2)  to work successfully with both landowners and key, allied organizations active in our community to promote the preservation of key conservation lands and other significant natural resources in our town; 3) to advance understanding  of our mission and the natural world among community members and enlist volunteers, donors, advocates and good neighbors to help with land conservation and stewardship; and, 4) to engage in and promote the scientific study of and education about regional, natural resources, as possible.

There are many ways to help: trail work, property monitoring and stewardship, programs and events, and outreach.

To have a confidential conversation with NHLT about the possibility of preserving your land, please contact us. Projects often take a few years to complete so please get in touch even if you are just thinking about it.  We can let you know if the land meets our criteria for conservation and how the process might work.
